Prepare to be inspired by the serene beauty of Zenhouse, a holiday home in India that embodies the essence of calm and tranquility. This architectural masterpiece, designed by Studio Nirvana, draws its inspiration from the ancient principles of Zen Buddhism, resulting in a minimalist and monochromatic haven.
Nestled amidst the lush greenery of Kerala, Zenhouse stands as a two-storey, 1,393-square-metre sanctuary, strategically positioned outside the bustling city of Palakkad. The home's layout is a work of art, seamlessly integrating with the natural surroundings, including mature mango and jackfruit trees. Studio Nirvana's vision comes to life as the home revolves around these majestic trees, providing shade to a series of external patios and offering breathtaking views through full-height glazing in the living areas.
But here's where it gets intriguing: the studio's unique approach to design. Instead of traditional corridors, they've created transitional spaces, or as they call them, "nothing spaces." These areas, according to founder Avinash Joshy, are the key to achieving a sense of calm. Joshy explains, "The design is deeply rooted in Japanese Zen philosophies, emphasizing simplicity, naturalness, emptiness, balance, and harmony. Our goal was to create an environment that fosters peace and quiet, allowing the mind to find solace."
And this is the part most people miss: the intentional sparseness of the design. Joshy continues, "Many of the transitional spaces remain unassigned, resulting in a deliberate lack of function. These spaces invite a sense of calm and stillness, promoting spaciousness and ease of movement."
As you enter Zenhouse, you're greeted by a paved, sheltered car parking area and a serene circular pool. This leads you into a series of interconnected living, dining, and kitchen spaces, each separated by picturesque tree-filled courtyards. On the ground floor, you'll find two bedrooms, while the first floor boasts three additional bedrooms surrounding a home theatre, office, and a bar. The highlight of this level is undoubtedly the swimming pool, illuminated by a stunning wall of sloping windows.
As you ascend to the top level, you're rewarded with an expansive roof terrace that envelops a small, intimate meditation room. This space, with its exposed concrete walls and a unique skylight, is a testament to the home's commitment to simplicity and naturalness.
The material palette of Zenhouse is a study in monochrome perfection. While most surfaces are coated in rough grey plaster, certain areas, such as the upper storey and perimeter walls, showcase exposed concrete, adding a raw, organic element to the design. Project architect Liz Tomy elaborates, "The material choices were driven by a desire for absolute calm, ensuring that nothing detracts from the architectural brilliance. We wanted the volume and spatial architecture to take center stage, so our selections were minimal, with a limited color palette and material finishes."
At the eastern end of the site, a separate block houses staff bedrooms and a service kitchen, with upper levels dedicated to a gym, sauna, and jacuzzi.
