Toprak Razgatlioglu, a name that's been making waves in the world of motorcycle racing, has recently expressed some candid thoughts about his upcoming debut season in MotoGP. With a hint of realism, he acknowledged that securing a spot on the podium this year might be more challenging than anticipated.
Joining Pramac Racing as one of the most prominent newcomers in recent times, Razgatlioglu boasts an impressive track record, having clinched three World Superbike Championships over the last five years. But don’t let his accolades fool you; the transition to MotoGP is no walk in the park. He faces a formidable learning curve as he adapts to Yamaha’s V4-powered M1, a significant upgrade from the BMW M1000R he previously raced in 2024 and 2025.
His manager, Kenan Sofuoglu, has high hopes for the 29-year-old, emphasizing that the objective is not just participation but to contend with the likes of 2021 MotoGP champion Fabio Quartararo within Yamaha's roster. However, Razgatlioglu himself is tempering expectations, candidly stating that it may take until 2027 for him to consistently vie for podium finishes.
"This year presents a substantial challenge for me," Razgatlioglu mentioned during Pramac’s launch event. "I view 2026 as my learning curve. Perhaps starting in 2027, with the new regulations, I’ll have a better chance to compete for a podium position."
He underscored the significance of this year, emphasizing the necessity to adapt to the motorcycle and familiarize himself with the tracks. "I will strive to give my all, just like my teammates who function as a big family, putting in their utmost effort every race weekend," he added, reflecting his commitment to the sport.
At the end of 2025, Razgatlioglu had a few chances to get acquainted with the Yamaha MotoGP bike through private sessions at Aragon and an official post-season test in Valencia. One of the most significant hurdles he faces in the upcoming season is the transition from Pirelli to Michelin tires, which plays a crucial role in a rider's performance within MotoGP.
Looking ahead, many speculate that Razgatlioglu could find himself in a more competitive position come 2027 when Pirelli takes over as the official tire supplier for MotoGP. Even then, it’s important to note that Pirelli will be developing specialized tires tailored specifically for the demands of this elite class.
When asked about the differences between the bikes, he expressed surprise at the M1 prototype’s straight-line speed. "My initial impressions are very positive; transitioning from Superbike to MotoGP feels like riding a completely different machine," he remarked, highlighting the incredible acceleration and speed of the bike.
"However, I need time to adapt and understand the nuances, especially concerning the tires and finding their limits. Fortunately, we have plenty of testing opportunities ahead, particularly a six-day session in Malaysia, which I hope will help us uncover the best ways to adapt—this bike is truly distinct, and I just need time to grow into it."
