Buckle up, folks! The government is revving up a new plan that'll have you paying for every mile you drive. Chancellor Rachel Reeves has confirmed the introduction of the Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) scheme, set to launch in April 2028, which will charge electric vehicle owners three pence per mile and hybrid owners 1.5 pence per mile, on top of existing car tax charges.
But here's where it gets controversial... The government claims this move is necessary to plug the gap in revenue from declining fuel duty as more drivers switch to electric vehicles. However, many are questioning the timing, arguing that it adds an extra financial burden on drivers still hesitant to make the switch to electric.
The eVED scheme aims to help double road maintenance funding in England, as "all cars contribute to wear and tear on our roads". A consultation has been launched to gather feedback from industry experts, and it's open until March 18, 2026.
Paul Hollick, chair of the Association of Fleet Professionals, warns that the timing is "highly questionable" and that adding costs before electric cars become the norm is a "very risky move". He urges drivers to share their thoughts and make their voices heard.
On the other hand, Labour's Electric Car Grant has been a hit, offering funding incentives of up to £3,750 for eligible models from top manufacturers like Ford, Mini, and Nissan. Over 45 models are available, making it easier for drivers to make the switch.
However, concerns remain about the practicalities of the scheme, particularly around data tracking and the potential administrative burden. As Mr Hollick points out, "Cars under three years old, representing the vast majority of fleet vehicles, don't visit MOT stations, and it's an area where we know there is undercapacity, so this will mean lost work time and unnecessary disruption."
