Donna Marie Duddy, known as DM, emphasizes the band's message of self-empowerment: "Renegade Zoo is about not putting limits on ourselves. It's about friendship and having the opportunity to write songs." Before joining, DM had little experience with songwriting, but the band provided a supportive environment where her creative talents flourished.
The Power of Music Education
Philip 'Wally' Wallace, the music media teacher at the Tuned In Project, played a crucial role in the band's formation. He recognized the potential within the students and helped them develop their musical skills. Wallace believes that being in a band has significantly contributed to the young people's confidence and self-esteem. He states, "We try to help the students find their voice through music and make sure their voice is being heard. Everyone in the band loves it, me included. It's hard work, but they put so much effort into the songwriting, recording, and performing."

The band's debut album, 'Eyes on the Road', launched in March at Derry's New Gate Arts and Culture Centre, was a celebration of their collective journey. Singer and percussionist Sarah Jane Murray, known as SJ, describes the album launch as one of the highlights of her time in the band. She recalls, "It was great to see everybody getting up dancing to these songs that we created ourselves."
SJ also highlights the band's collaborative songwriting process, where melodies and guitar riffs are crafted together. She says, "We'll sit together, come up with melodies and guitar riffs. Sometimes Wally or somebody else will bring in a guitar riff, and we'll build a song around it."
A Musical Tapestry of Influences
Renegade Zoo's sound is a unique blend of various genres, including rock, pop, alt-country, and hip-hop. Singer Sorcha Friel explains their eclectic approach, stating, "A lot of our songs aren't typical break-up songs or romance songs. A Renegade Zoo song either has a great message or can just be a bit silly."
One of their tracks, 'Waggledance', was inspired by an unexpected source—a random conversation about bees. This showcases the band's ability to draw from everyday life and transform it into captivating music.

Performing at the Stendhal Festival has been a significant milestone for the band. Sorcha Friel expresses her excitement, saying, "The bigger the crowd, the better. I get more nervous with a more intimate crowd."

DM dreams of a UK tour, while SJ believes a tour of Northern Ireland may be more feasible. Sorcha Friel's hopes are simple yet powerful: "More new songs, more just being ourselves."
