"Bigger than life itself": A road safety advocate, who tragically lost her son in an accident, welcomes new regulations in the UK aimed at saving lives.
Meera Naran views the newly introduced road safety strategy as a significant achievement after years of relentless advocacy following the heartbreaking loss of her eight-year-old son, Dev, who died in a motorway accident back in 2018.
As officials revealed their ambitious plans to drastically reduce road fatalities by the year 2035, they acknowledged the tireless efforts of campaigners like Naran. In a heartfelt tribute, they announced a commitment to implement safety technologies in new vehicles, which will be known as "Dev’s Law" in memory of her son.
The tragic incident in 2018 was compounded by sorrow for Naran's family. Her father had been driving Dev to visit his older brother, Neel, who was hospitalized at the time. On their way back along the M6, their vehicle came to a stop on what would typically be a hard shoulder, were it not for the transformation of that area into part of a smart motorway. Unfortunately, a lorry barreled into them, resulting in Dev's untimely death. Naran's father passed away a few years later due to severe injuries sustained in that collision, while Neel struggled with the emotional impact of losing his younger brother, ultimately passing away in 2024.
Initially advocating for modifications to smart motorways, Naran expanded her focus to encompass safer vehicle technology overall, such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB). This innovation alerts drivers and automatically applies brakes if a crash seems imminent and the driver does not respond in time.
She expressed, "If the lorry involved had been equipped with autonomous braking, that accident could have possibly been completely avoided, allowing Dev to return home safely that night. Therefore, the push for Dev’s Law and AEB has stemmed from my campaign, where I’ve examined every aspect related to Dev’s tragic death. This technology was a crucial factor, and I genuinely believe it can save lives."
While various forms of driver-assistance technology, including AEB and lane-keeping assistance, are already available in most modern vehicles, they are not yet mandated in the UK.
At 42 years old, Naran, who serves as a senior lecturer in clinical pharmacy at Leicester’s De Montfort University, has utilized her professional expertise in her advocacy work. She emphasizes the need for evidence-based consultation and the ability to separate personal anguish from factual data.
Local transport minister Lilian Greenwood stated that the new strategy is "grounded in evidence but propelled by the voices of those who have experienced the tragic repercussions of road accidents firsthand." Greenwood praised Naran for her unwavering dedication to promoting life-saving technologies in memory of her son, Dev.
Naran fondly recalled Dev as both a "best friend and supporter" to his older brother Neel, who faced complex health issues, including epilepsy. She reflected, "When Neel learned that Dev was gone, he slowly began to lose hope."
Her mission has shifted to embracing each day as an opportunity to transform her grief into something much larger than herself, striving actively to effect change in road safety.
"For the government to recognize this initiative and commit to implementing it truly matters," Naran noted. "The emotional toll of campaigning through our losses has been immense, but my fight has always transcended my personal grief; it’s about a broader cause, one that surpasses our stories."
She concluded, "This is a lifelong commitment to reducing road fatalities. I never want another family to endure what we have gone through."
